As the tsunami recovery effort moves into high gear, businesses from around the world are emerging as leaders in the effort to fund this massive undertaking. In order to paint a picture of the extensive and diverse corporate efforts, ICP has compiled a detailed list of the efforts of 200 corporations.  Our sources include the Council on Foundations, CSR Newswire, PR Newswire, The Chronicle on Philanthropy, company press releases and Websites.  Our list includes the amount of the company’s cash gift(s); grantees (where identified); in-kind contributions; matching gift criteria and amounts; and any other salient information.

Fonte Coffee Roasters
Financial Assistance:  $1,000 to the American Red Cross International Response Fund
In-Kind Donation:

Other:  Fonte Coffee Roasters will donate $2 per pound of Sumatra coffee sold via the company’s website or over the phone.  The offer is valid “until further notice.”  The company hopes to motivate other coffee roasters to similarly participate in the relief effort via the Specialty Coffee Association of America.

Freddie Mac
Financial Assistance:  $100,000 to the American Red Cross International Relief Fund
In-Kind Donation:  The company will consider using employees to package goods being sent to the region, if labor is needed.
Employee Matching Gift Program:  The Freddie Mac Foundation is matching employee gifts on a 1:1 basis.  The usual $25 minimum for matching gifts has been waived.

General Electric

In-Kind Donation:  GE is making donations of products and services valued at more than $7,000,000.
Employee Matching Gift Program:  GE is matching employee gifts on a 1:1 basis.
Other:  Employees in the region affected by the tsunami are taking part in the relief effort.  GE-owned WNBC hosted an hour-long special during prime-time on January 5, encouraging viewers to give to help the victims.  The station gave up the more than $100,000 in advertising revenue it typically earns in this time spot.  NBC networks, also owned by GE, will broadcast a benefit concert on January 15.

General Mills
Financial Assistance:  $750,000 to His Majesty the King of Thailand Foundation, Prime Minister’s National Relief Fund of India, Doctors Without Borders, UNICEF. and the American Red Cross.
In-Kind Donation:
Employee Matching Gift Program:  General Mills will give $250,000 to the American Red Cross to match employee gifts.

Other:  2,600 participating stores will offer a coin box collection to channel customer donations to UNICEF, from January 7 to 31.  The store boxes usually raise funds for the Tim Hortons Children’s Foundation.

Time Warner
Financial Assistance:  The company has announced total donations of $2,000,000.  Time Warner contributed $100,000 each to the American Red Cross International Response Fund and UNICEF’s South Asia Tsunami Relief Fund.  AOL contributed $200,000 to the American Red Cross’s International Relief Fund.  Turner Entertainment Networks Asia is contributing $100,000 each to the Red Cross and UNICEF, and Turner Europe is donating $100,000 to UNICEF.
In-kind donation:
Employee matching gift program:  Time Warner will match employee gifts up to $500,000, made through the company’s Network for Good Tsunami Relief website, to the Red Cross, UNICEF, CARE, Doctors Without Borders, and Save the Children.  The company contributed an additional $100,000 to account for donations made before the matching gift site was online.  Time Warner will also pay Network for Good’s 3% processing fee during the month of January, so 100% of employee donations will go to the relief effort.  AOL will match up to $100,000 in employee donations.
Other:  AOL, with Network for Good, created a public donation site.  Time Inc., Time Warner Cable, Turner, AOL, The WB, and Court TV, in partnership with the Ad Council, will provide public service advertising to support the relief agencies and their work.  CNN and Time Inc. are offering the public information on how to reach relief agencies, while CNN.com is helping to identify survivors and reunite them with loved ones.

Toyota Motor North America
Financial Assistance:

Employee matching gift program:  Toyota Motor North America will match North American employee gifts to the International Relief Fund of the American Red Cross and UNICEF, up to $1,000,000.
Other:  Toyota Motor Corporation is donating an additional $3,000,000 to the relief effort.  In the U.S., Toyota and Lexus dealers are also contributing funds.

Financial Assistance:  $3,275,000 (Unocal followed a $275,000 grant to the Red Cross with a $3,000,000 pledge to support long-term recovery efforts.)

Employee matching gift program:  Verizon employee donations to the American Red Cross and UNICEF will be matched 2:1 until January 31.  Donations to other charities will be matched 1:1.  Employee gifts are matched up to $2,500 per year.
Other:  Verizon Wireless customers can donate in $5 increments, up to $25, by sending a text message to a specified phone number.  Customers will be billed on their next phone bills.  The program ends in early February, when 100% of proceeds will go to CARE.  Customers may also donate via Verizon websites.

Other:  Through January 31, the company, with ICICI Bank, is waiving remittance transfer fees and foreign currency fees on money sent from Americans to loved ones in India affected by the tsunami.
