BRAC Launches Cyclone Relief Operations
The death toll – currently at 3,100 – from last week’s Cyclone Sidr is expected to rise, as aid and relief agencies race to get aid to the millions in Bangladesh left homeless in the wake of the disaster.
One such organization is BRAC,a Bangladesh-based non-profit organization that works with people whose lives are dominated by extreme poverty, illiteracy, disease and other handicaps. With multifaceted development interventions, BRAC strives to bring about positive changes in the quality of life of the poor people of Bangladesh. It is one of the largest non-profits in the world. Its microfinance program, with 6 million borrowers, has cumulatively disbursed $4 billion, and more than 1.5 million children are currently enrolled in 52,000 BRAC’s schools. Its health program reaches over 100 million people.
BRAC has made an initial commitment of $1 million for extensive cyclone relief operations and hopes to mobilize an additional $1 million. Over 2,500 BRAC staff have already been deployed to provide around-the-clock relief in 11 of the worst-affected districts, distributing food and other relief items to cyclone victims.
