News Briefing: Anonomous $100 Million Donor Provides Scholarships for 1,200

  • In elections held yesterday by the Board of Trustees of The Museum of Modern Art, Jerry I. Speyer was elected as Chairman, succeeding Robert B. Menschel. Mr. Speyer, President & CEO of Tishman Speyer Properties, has been as a member of the MoMA Board of Trustees since 1982. He becomes Chairman after serving as Vice Chairman since 1996. In addition to acting as a member of the Executive Committee and chairing the Fund for the 21 st Century and the Development Committee, Mr. Speyer has been a member of the Nominating Committee, Finance Committee, Ad Hoc Committee on Government Relations, Committee on Painting and Sculpture, New Building Committee, and Library Council. Mr. Speyer has been listed since 2004 in ARTnews’ Top 200 Collectors. He regularly displays world-class art in public spaces, including Rockefeller Center. [New York Observer]
  • HSBC staked its pitch as Britain’s most environmentally friendly bank yesterday by pledging to donate $100m (£51m) to four climate-change charities over the next five years. The bank said its "Climate Partnership" would support the Climate Group, the Earthwatch Institute, the Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute and the World Wildlife Fund. [Independent]
  • The $100 million donor, a University of Chicago graduate who asked to remain anonymous, said he wanted to ensure all students could have access to a top-notch school and be able to follow whatever path they choose. The largest single gift ever received by a Chicago area school will go toward full scholarships 1,200 students each year. [Chicago Sun-Times]
