Fundraising with The Raiser’s Edge: A Non-Technical Guide
This book is just what it says, a helpful tool with supportive guides for the average fundraiser who is not necessarily the IT person on the team. Author Bill Connors, not surprisingly, has several years at Raiser’s Edge developer Blackbaud on his resume. I think it’s an added value that he also spent part of his career as Director of Development with Junior Achievement in Arizona, as well as having helped JA National roll-out Raisers’ Edge for their field offices. As a result, he bridges the great divide between technology and the practitioners who need to make it an advantage, not an added burden.
After making the investment in Raiser’s Edge, nonprofits often fail to get the most productive return, because staff use only a portion of its capabilities, or fail to use it correctly. Connors provides checklists, illustrated step-by-step guides and practical tips for properly segmenting data, getting useful reports and managing numerous development functions such as special events, grants and memberships. He also offers specific advice for hiring, managing and retaining your organization’s database administrator.
Some of us find it especially comforting to pick up a book like Fundraising with The Raiser’s Edge, which walks us through some of the basic steps in the effective use of this fundraising tool, when we’d frankly be embarrassed to ask for help (if we could even figure out whom to ask).
